Description:
This Order designates 84 coastal or transitional water areas in the Scottish River Basin District as “shellfish water protected areas” under the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003. The areas are identified on maps laid before the Scottish Parliament and published by the Scottish Ministers (www.scotland.gov.uk). The Regulations aim to support shellfish life and growth and ensure high-quality shellfish suitable for human consumption. Objectives under section 9(1)(a)(ii) of the Act are to: (a) prevent deterioration of shellfish water quality; and (b) protect and improve each area to achieve good shellfish water quality by 22 December 2015.
