The United States promotes the development and use of voluntary, consensus-based IoT data standards, with key guidance coming from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). There is no single, mandatory U.S. standard for all IoT data; rather, the focus is on a framework for security and interoperability. Following the IoT Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2020, NIST developed and published a series of guidelines and standards for federal agencies to use when procuring IoT devices. These publications include: NISTIR 8259A, IoT Device Cybersecurity Capability Core Baseline: Provides a baseline set of security capabilities for new IoT devices. NIST SP 800-213, IoT Device Cybersecurity Guidance for the Federal Government: Offers guidance on how federal agencies should integrate and manage IoT devices securely. NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF): A widely adopted, voluntary guideline used across industries for managing cybersecurity risks, which is highly applicable to IoT systems. |
