The aim of the Lappajärvi project was to create and implement an integrated management system for the restoration of eutrophied lakes. The system would be based on - the reduction of diffuse loading from both external sources in the catchment, and internal sources from the lake sediment for instance; diverse restoration measures in the catchment area and the lake; impact assessments and; increasing environmental awareness. The management system would be a new way of promoting sustainable development by maintaining the natural ecosystems, preserving the cultural landscape around the lake and improving the recreational value of the lake. - Resource:
